What Do you Know About MARVEL?
The Maine Regional Library System is pleased to announce a new DVD entitled The Marvels of MARVEL! Maine’s Virtual Library starring Maine humorist Tim Sample and Rockport Library Director Molly Larson. The Marvels of MARVEL! was filmed by Mount Desert Island filmmaker Jeff Dobbs at the Southwest Harbor Public Library. The video was released in January and is available at local libraries, every school in Maine, on the web at http://www.maine.gov/msl/marvelvideo/, and it can be viewed on Channel 2 MDI, our public access television station between 7 and 9 p.m. daily. The making of this DVD was made possible through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Rural Sustainability Project.
So what is MARVEL! ? MARVEL! is a collection of newspapers, magazines, journals, encyclopedias and other trusted reference resources, which you can access from your library, work, or home by logging on to http://www.maine.gov/marvel/. The cost of these resources would be in excess of $500,000, which even the largest of Maine’s public libraries can ill afford to purchase! Funding comes from legislation, the Maine State Library, the University of Maine -Fogler Library and the Public Utilities Commission, and MTEAF (Maine Telecommunications Educational Access Fund) commonly know as state e-rate.
